Oblivion's 20th anniversary highlights how the game brought The Elder Scrolls to consoles and modernized many of the series' mechanics. Some point to the quest against the Mystic Dawn as a pillar of the studio's creative approach. Tim Lamb, now a lead creative producer at Bethesda and previously a QA lead on Oblivion, says development felt revolutionary: "When we were developing that it felt like it had never been done before.

It was like we were breaking all the rules, and we were doing something special, and impossible." Lamb traces a line from Oblivion through Fallout 3, Skyrim and Fallout 4, calling each new release a chance to refine what came before. "It's all of the lessons that we learned from all of those different games to land where we are now," he states, adding that there are systems where he can "see the pathway" and where the team "detoured." He calls Oblivion "a special game." Oblivion earned glowing critical reception and huge sales across platforms, and those lessons influenced later Bethesda hits.
