Odessa A'zion, 25, told The Hollywood Reporter she would not go into detail about whether her mother, Pamela Adlon, influenced her decision to become an actress, calling it “really hard to answer.” A'zion, who stars in the film Marty Supreme, was interviewed about her family and her mother's career during the conversation with THR.

The discussion touched on Adlon's FX series Better Things (2019–2022), long viewed as autobiographical for its depiction of a divorced actress raising three children. A'zion, who was 16 when Better Things premiered, told THR “People will assume things based off of watching the show,” and read from a note on her phone that the series is “very much from one person’s perspective of possible shared experiences.” A'zion declined to discuss whether her mother’s career inspired her or whether Adlon tried to talk her out of acting, saying, “It’s really hard to talk about without getting into personal specifics that I probably shouldn’t let the world know about,” and again called the question “really hard to answer.” THR noted she adopted a stage name inspired by her middle name, Zion, in 2021.

She has two sisters, Gideon and Valentine “Rocky,” and Adlon shares the three daughters with ex-husband Felix O. Adlon. Adlon has previously described basing Better Things on her life as a “lightning-bolt” moment and told NPR’s Fresh Air she was initially protective of her children’s involvement before later including them in casting and material decisions.
