Ohsnap starts shipping $150 Mcon magnetic phone controller after CES demo
Ohsnap is finally shipping its $150 Mcon Bluetooth controller after about a year of tweaks, a device that was spotted in the CES halls and magnetically mounts an iPhone or Android phone.
Kerry Wan at ZDNET described using the Mcon as placing a phone on a magnetic pad and flicking outward to reveal joysticks and control keys underneath. The writer compared the device to a Sidekick meets PSP Go and highlighted design touches including extendable grips, a kickstand and an optional $70 dock that can mirror the phone to a monitor or TV for distant play.
The ZDNET writer said the Mcon recalls a Nintendo Switch in function but is pocketable, and suggested that its timing aligns with the popularity of emulators, cloud gaming and newer Qi2-enabled Android phones, saying it "feels like it's peaking at just the right time."
According to the report, the Mcon is available to buy now for $150, with deliveries expected to ship in late January; the dock accessory is sold separately for $70.
