Olympian Amber Glenn is a Magic: The Gathering superfan
On Feb. 8, Amber Glenn became the sixth woman in Winter Olympics history to land a triple axel in competition, helping Team USA win gold in the team event. A short profile aired with Olympic coverage also showed a different side of her: she pulled Magic: The Gathering cards from her pockets, including Pyroblast and Last Chance, and said she left her "super fancy" cards at home because they’re her "prized possessions." In the video Glenn described the game as "a battle-based game that has to do with different planes of existence and realms, and you usually play against a couple other people," a comment that all but confirms she plays four-player Commander.
She said she goes to local game stores to play and added, "I know it's nerdy, but it's my hobby and I enjoy it." Born in Plano, Texas, Glenn has spent most of her life on the ice and has spoken about the heavy mental strain of elite competition. "My skating and mental health journey are an ever-continuing path," she said.
