The Milan Cortina Winter Olympics are a little over halfway finished, and the Games have delivered heartbreaking, inspirational and game-changing moments. One of the most touching images came when figure skater Max Naumov, after making his Olympic debut in the men's short program, held up a picture of himself with his mother and father.

Naumov lost both parents in January 2025 in the mid-air collision near Washington D.C. that claimed 67 lives, including more than two dozen in the skating community. His parents, Vadim Naumov and Evgenia Shishkova, were Russian pair skaters turned coaches who supported their son's Olympic dream.

Another dramatic moment involved skier Lindsey Vonn, who un-retired to return to the Games but tore her ACL a week before the Opening Ceremony. She crashed shortly after beginning her downhill on February 8 and was airlifted for medical attention; she later said she had "no regrets" about the journey.
