One Battle After Another sweeps Oscars as Jordan and Buckley win major awards
Paul Thomas Anderson’s counter-culture caper One Battle After Another dominated the Oscars, taking six awards including best picture, director, supporting actor (Sean Penn), adapted screenplay, editing and the inaugural Oscar for casting. Anderson, previously nominated for films including Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood and Phantom Thread, said: "I wrote this movie for my kids to say sorry for the housekeeping mess we left in this world we’re handing off to them," and added he hoped a younger generation would bring back "common sense and decency".
Tonight marked his first Oscar wins. The season had been a two-horse race between One Battle After Another and Sinners, which entered the night with a record 16 nominations. The period vampire blockbuster won four awards, including actor for Michael B Jordan, original screenplay, original score and cinematography; Autumn Durald Arkapaw became the first female and first Black winner of that prize.
