Chinatown is now available to stream in the United States on Paramount+. Released in 1974, the film arrived during Paramount's New Hollywood heyday under executive Robert Evans and has since been hailed as one of the greatest crime thrillers.

Roman Polanski directed the movie, which stars Jack Nicholson as an investigator who unearths widespread corruption in California, alongside Faye Dunaway and John Huston. It was Polanski's last Hollywood film before he fled to Europe after being indicted for statutory rape; he had previously made Rosemary's Baby for the studio.

The picture earned 11 Oscar nominations and won Best Original Screenplay for Robert Towne. It runs about 130 minutes, grossed roughly $30 million worldwide on a reported budget just over $5 million, and holds a near‑perfect 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes, praised for Towne's screenplay, Polanski's direction and the performances.
