‘One Piece’ Season 1 — What to Remember Before Season 2

Almost 30 years after Eiichiro Oda introduced One Piece, the franchise has grown to more than 100 volumes and over 1,100 episodes. Netflix’s live-action adaptation became a hit with both longtime fans and new viewers, thanks to relatable characters, action and heart.

Show developers Matt Owens and Steven Maeda condensed much of the East Blue Saga into eight episodes, adapting nearly 100 manga chapters and 61 anime episodes. The series opens with Gol D. Roger’s execution and the promise of the One Piece, which sparks the Great Pirate Era.

Monkey D. Luffy, having eaten a Gum‑Gum Fruit and gained rubber-like abilities, sets out to become King of the Pirates after receiving Shanks’ straw hat. Along the way he frees cabin boy Koby, allies with navigator Nami, and recruits swordsman Roronoa Zoro; Koby chooses to pursue his own dream of joining the Marines.
