Bret Taylor, OpenAI’s board chair, told the Uncapped podcast he prefers concise written materials from board members rather than slide presentations. He said written memos let people synthesize information ahead of time, which leads to more substantive discussion in the boardroom.

Taylor added that he and his Sierra cofounder Clay Bavor use writing as a way to clarify and synthesize what’s been happening, and he urged peers: “don’t write it with AI.” He described the act of writing eloquently and concisely as an important thinking exercise.

He expects board members to read materials before meetings so discussions focus on the “meat and potatoes” of topics instead of first encountering numbers in the room. Taylor argued brevity shows careful thought and respect for stakeholders, echoing the idea that spending time to shorten a piece demonstrates care.
