OpenAI may add Sora video generation to ChatGPT
Ask ChatGPT to make a short film and it may soon be able to do so. Inside sources told The Information that OpenAI plans to integrate its video generator Sora directly into ChatGPT, just months after Sora’s standalone app launched. The TikTok-style app would remain available, but the move suggests OpenAI is focusing its main effort on beefing up ChatGPT.
Bringing Sora into ChatGPT would increase processing demands and cost the company money—OpenAI estimates it will spend $225 billion to run its models between now and 2030—but it could recoup that expense if ChatGPT stays the dominant chatbot. The company has also floated the idea of monetizing video generation itself to users of the Sora app.
Sora’s rollout has seen highs and lows. OpenAI received a $1 billion investment from Disney that included licensing characters for use in ChatGPT and Sora, but the model also faced criticism after producing problematic deepfakes of historic figures and infringing on Hollywood IP.
