This time last year we might have already been aware of Oscar-winning films like One Battle After Another and Hamnet, but Sunday’s ceremony showed the race isn’t always easy to predict. Horror films such as Sinners, Weapons and Frankenstein and the phenomenon of KPop Demon Hunters were not seen as contenders, while international films continue to surprise.

Aaron Sorkin remains a formidable presence. His unconventional semi-sequel The Social Reckoning, about the 2021 leak from Frances Haugen, stars Mikey Madison as Haugen and Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg; the Academy has rewarded Sorkin before, though internet-set films are notoriously hard to nail.

Sandra Hüller, who broke out with Anatomy of a Fall, appears in Project Hail Mary and will co-lead Paweł Pawlikowski’s 1949, with a supporting part in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Digger also lined up. Ryusuke Hamaguchi is preparing a French–Japanese drama about the director of a nursing home and a terminally ill playwright, with Neon behind it and Cannes anticipated.
