Cristian Romero was named Tottenham captain last September and spoke to the English media with a conciliatory tone, saying: “I did a lot of interviews which seemed like I was talking badly about people inside the club but, in the end, I’m a person who sometimes makes mistakes.” He stayed at the club, signed a contract extension to 2029 and accepted the captaincy because he believed the situation would improve: “In the end, it depends on everyone that we pull in the same direction.” Five months on, Romero posted on social media after the winter transfer window closed, expressing frustration at the squad’s condition and calling it “Disgraceful.” He had felt unwell before the Champions League game at Eintracht Frankfurt, played the 90 minutes of the 2-0 win, then left the Manchester City game at half-time after feeling worse, having earlier faced an injury-hit selection with only 13 established outfield players available.

Romero’s combative, all-in style has made him a fans’ favourite and his words carry weight.
