Standing on stage at the Golden Globes, 16-year-old Owen Cooper from Warrington said the experience “did not feel real” after picking up best supporting male actor for his part in Netflix’s drama Adolescence, which was one of the ceremony’s big winners and dominated discussion of male toxicity in 2025.

Adolescence took four Golden Globes and followed its success at the Emmys, where it won six awards including another for Cooper. Those who taught and worked with him say his commitment was evident early on: Esther Morgan of the Drama Mob said, “You could tell he definitely wanted it.

He wasn’t messing around when it came to listening, taking direction and learning his lines.” Morgan said Cooper had two years with the group before the casting process and that “his name just kept coming back.” Co-writer Jack Thorne recalled Cooper arriving “word perfect and ready to work” for rehearsals on episode three and said that, with help from director Philip Barantini and Erin Doherty, “by Friday he was Jamie.” Morgan, a long‑time advocate for northern actors, pushed back against the idea Cooper “came from nowhere” and warned that industry centralisation in London is squeezing talent elsewhere: she said “more shows need to be made and produced up here” and warned young people lack funds to travel for casting.
