Pablo Castelblanco said he had a blast playing Steve’s temporary macho turn on Happy’s Place, calling the bit a dose of “toxic masculinity” that revealed an unseen side of the germaphobic accountant after he kills a spider. “Oh God, I really had fun, a lot of fun that week,” Castelblanco said, adding, “I love that his confidence kind of looks like toxic masculinity.” In the episode, Steve and Gabby panic after finding a spider under the bar and both admit their fears before Steve summons the courage to act.

He vents, “Arachnids are so arrogant,” squirts hand sanitizer and rescues the spider “in the most sanitary way possible,” then asks Gabby for a beer — actually a root beer — which he slides, guzzles and slams on the bar to celebrate his newfound bravado. Castelblanco enjoyed the physical comedy, including moments when Steve kisses his bicep and breaks a few bottles, and he praised the props team for their work.

“I was so grateful to the writers that they gave me that little arc,” he said.
