Pacific Rim Uprising lands on Hulu — 'Top Gun' meets 'Transformers' sequel
Pacific Rim Uprising, the 2018 sci-fi sequel directed by Steven S. DeKnight and often described as a blend of Top Gun and Transformers, will join Hulu on April 1, 2026. The film stars John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, Adria Arjona and Zhang Jin, with Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman returning from the original.
Set in 2035, ten years after the events of the first film, the sequel follows Jake, the son of Marshal Stacker Pentecost, as he returns to the Pan Pacific Defense Corps to stop a renewed Kaiju threat. Where the original leaned into atmospheric monster-movie roots, Pacific Rim Uprising is faster-paced and more heavily action-driven.
Despite underperforming at the box office and with critics, the film has enjoyed a resurgence on streaming. It currently holds a 42% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 37% audience rating, and earned $290.9 million at the box office against a budget of $150–176 million, while the 2013 Pacific Rim fared better with critics and made $411 million.
