'Paradise' viewers furious after Annie's death
Annie, played by Shailene Woodley, dies in the latest episode of Paradise after giving birth. The character, a medical student, suffered from preeclampsia and succumbed to severe postpartum bleeding following premature labor while she and Xavier were traveling to Atlanta to find Xavier’s wife, Teri.
Viewers reacted angrily online, calling the decision to kill off the character frustrating and abrupt. One fan wrote, “They really killed Annie on #ParadiseSeason2 ? That sh-t just pissed me off so bad! Wtf,” while another posted, “WE JUST MET ANNIE NOOO I WAS ROOTING FOR HER SINCE EPISODE 1 YOU CANT JUST KILL HER.” Woodley said she knew the broad arc for Annie — that she would become pregnant, give birth and then die — but did not know the exact details until reading episode four.
She described the death scene as “so profoundly and poignantly written,” and admitted she was “utterly exhausted” after filming the birth and death sequence, noting the cast and director spent time choreographing and rehearsing the scene.
