Paramount Pictures and Hasbro have passed on Max Landis' pitch for a G.I. Joe reboot, Variety says. The news follows earlier reporting that Paramount was developing two competing pitches: one from Danny McBride and another from Landis. Paramount is reportedly still working with McBride.

Landis described his idea as coming together "very serendipitously based on the coolness of the weird and subversive idea." He said the picture would have imagined a world where Cobra had "successfully taken over the world and reduced GI Joe to a conspiracy theory," and added, "This is just how big IP development always is.

Honestly, I was surprised it was reported at all." He also said he was "Tremendously grateful to have been given the opportunity." There are several possible reasons Paramount passed. The premise echoed elements of 2013's G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which showed a Cobra flag over the White House, and executives likely noted the controversy surrounding Landis, who has been accused by multiple women of harassment and assault.
