'Paranormal Activity' Director Promises Sequel Was Written for the "Fans"
Thanks to his film Undertone impressing film festival audiences in 2025, filmmaker Ian Tuason was announced as the creative who was set to revive the Paranormal Activity franchise. Speaking with MovieWeb, Tuason coyly confirmed, "Well, I don't wanna give away too much, but I really did write this thing for the fans, the Paranormal Activity fans." One of the key strengths of the original Paranormal Activity was its restraint, helped by a shoestring budget.
The original movie cost between $10,000 and $15,000, used unknown actors and kept the narrative confined to a single house. Subsequent installments expanded the scope, adding mythology and digital effects that moved away from the claustrophobic feel of the early films.
Tuason's Undertone offers a case for why he was tapped to return the series to its roots. The film follows a pair of podcasters (Nina Kiri and Adam DiMarco) who investigate mysterious audio recordings, with the story unfolding in Evy's (Kiri) home as she cares for her debilitated mother.
