Filmmaker Ian Tuason, who is set to direct the next Paranormal Activity film, says his take is being built with the franchise’s core audience in mind. In an interview with MovieWeb, Tuason said, "I really did write this thing for the fans, the Paranormal Activity fans." The series began with Paranormal Activity (2007), starring Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat.

That first entry was made for an ultra-low production budget of about $15,000 and went on to earn roughly $193–194 million worldwide, making it one of the most profitable horror movies ever relative to cost; Featherston returned for several subsequent films. That tiny, claustrophobic simplicity proved difficult to reproduce.

Although the first four films turned small budgets into global grosses ranging from about $143 million to $207 million, later installments struggled to recapture the original’s precise blend of minimalism and dread.
