POP MART and Sony Pictures have confirmed a feature film based on LABUBU is moving forward in development. Paul King will direct, produce and co-write the script with Steven Levenson. The project was unveiled in Paris during THE MONSTERS’ global exhibition tour marking the brand's 10th anniversary and is being developed as a live-action and CGI hybrid.

LABUBU was created by Kasing Lung in a 2015 picture-book trilogy and has grown into a global collectible phenomenon and one of POP MART’s biggest icons. Lung is an executive producer, with Michael Schaefer and Wenxin She producing and Brittany Morrissey overseeing the project for Sony.

There is no cast yet, and the film faces the initial hurdle of convincing audiences that a dangly monster from a handbag can carry a movie. King’s work on the Paddington films and Wonka, and Levenson’s credits including Dear Evan Hansen, tick, tick... BOOM! and Fosse/Verdon, shape the creative team attached to the project.
