How Penny Dreadful Ended With a Surprising Three-Season Finale
Penny Dreadful ran for three seasons on Showtime and took its title from 19th-century penny dreadfuls. The show reimagined classic Gothic figures—Dorian Gray, Dracula, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Victor Frankenstein and his Creature, and Ethan Chandler, a werewolf—within a dark, serialized drama.
Eva Green's Vanessa Ives served as the series' emotional center. Introduced as an enigmatic medium torn between faith and a dark nature, Vanessa is possessed, hunted by Evelyn Poole and her coven, and sought by both Lucifer and Dracula. Prophesied as the "Mother of Evil," her story culminates in Season 3's "Ebb Tide," when Dracula coerces her into embracing that destiny.
The third-season finale, "The Blessed Dark," brings her arc to a close. Amid a raging battle, Ethan finds Vanessa in Dracula's lair; she asks him to kill her, and he does. Dracula flees, the Creature kneels at her grave reciting a poem, and a title card that reads "The End" closes the episode — and, as it turned out, the series.
