People you didn't know had an Oscar
On Sunday, Hollywood's elites will descend upon the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles for the biggest night in film: the Oscars. While some names feel synonymous with Academy history, other winners have been largely forgotten. Take Eminem: he won the Oscar for best original song in 2003 for "Lose Yourself" and wasn't present to accept the award, later returning for a surprise performance in 2020.
Other unexpected winners span genres and careers. Jim Rash shared the best adapted screenplay award in 2012 for "The Descendants." Peter Capaldi won best live action short film in 1995 for "Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life." Stevie Wonder took best original song in 1985 for "I Just Called to Say I Love You," and Three 6 Mafia won best original song in 2006 for "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp." Several actors earned Oscars early or for roles that contrast with the parts they’re best known for.
Anna Paquin won best supporting actress in 1994 for "The Piano" at age 11.
