Peter Molydeux parody X account goes offline after 16 years
Polygon reports that the Peter Molydeux X parody account, created by artist Adam Capone, has gone offline after 16 years, with Capone saying video games are now too hard to satirize. Capone created the long-running account in 2009 and it gained popularity in the early 2010s for absurd pitches that lampooned Peter Molyneux’s reputation; the account currently had more than 60,000 followers on X.
In a final post on Jan. 13, Capone, a 3D environment artist who recently lost his job when Ubisoft shuttered its Halifax studio, said he decided to close the account in a blog post and explained that indie games have made Molyneux-style ideas feel less unusual. "I started this account back in 2009, around the Xbox Arcade era, when indie games were beginning a real resurgence such as Braid, Limbo, and others," Capone wrote, and he pointed to examples like Donut County and Viewfinder as reasons those concepts no longer read as outrageous.
Capone also cited Peter Molyneux’s impending retirement as a factor; Molyneux has said he plans to retire after the release of his next game, Masters of Albion, which is set to launch on April 22. Capone wrote, "I hope every generation creates its own Molyneuxs," and mentioned Joseph Fares at Hazelight as a developer who evokes that spirit.
