Peter Moore, known for high-profile gaming stunts such as revealing the Halo 2 release date tattoo at E3 2004 and a similar moment for Grand Theft Auto 4, left Electronic Arts in 2017 to become CEO of Liverpool FC. The club won the UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and the Premier League during his tenure, but his contract was not renewed and he was replaced in 2020.

Moore said his habit of engaging directly with fans on social media irritated his American owners, who regarded the approach as unstatesmanlike even when most posts were simple thank-yous to travelling supporters. He singled out one tweet he now regrets: after Norwich City beat Manchester City—a result he called "a huge shock" and a turning point in Liverpool’s title chase—he posted a picture of a canary, saw thousands of likes almost immediately, and was soon urged via WhatsApp to remove it.

He described the post as stupid and unstatesmanlike, and said those criticisms showed up in his performance review.
