Phil Dunster (Ted Lasso) to Play Eret in Live‑Action How to Train Your Dragon 2
Per Deadline, Phil Dunster has been cast as Eret in Universal Pictures' live‑action How to Train Your Dragon 2. The original Eret was voiced by Kit Harington, and Dunster is best known for Apple TV's Ted Lasso, which returns for a fourth season after a three‑year hiatus. The sequel brings back Mason Thames as Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, Gerard Butler as Stoick the Vast, Nico Parker as Astrid Hofferson, and Julian Dennison as Fishlegs Ingerman.
Acting royalty Cate Blanchett is onboard as Valka Haddock, and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will play warlord Drago Bludvist — a character closely associated with dragon dealer Eret. How to Train Your Dragon 2 is scheduled to glide into cinemas on June 11, 2027. The story rejoins Hiccup at age 20, five years after the events of the first film; despite believing his mother Valka was dead, he comes face to face with her, while newcomer Drago threatens to conquer the world with a fire‑breathing horde.
The filmmaker behind the live‑action sequel, Dean DeBlois, told Variety he took huge inspiration from the Star Wars franchise — particularly The Empire Strikes Back — as he sought a deeper, richer tonal scope. DeBlois has said he was interested in a trilogy approach, and the animated series did later conclude with How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World in 2019.
