Philippines orders energy cuts in response to Middle East war
The Philippines has ordered national government agencies, state universities and colleges, and local government branches to cut fuel consumption by at least 10% as fuel costs rise linked to the Middle East conflict. Offices have been instructed to adopt flexible work arrangements and to set air-conditioning no lower than 24 degrees.
A presidential palace spokesperson said a four-day working week could be considered if the crisis worsens. A senator had earlier suggested a four-day week or expanded work-from-home arrangements, though the measure has not yet been discussed by the cabinet. The country imports almost all its oil and is particularly exposed to global price rises; inflation reached 2.4% in February, a 13-month high.
Other regional steps include Thai defence ministry advice to cut air-conditioning use and rely on video conferencing, and Myanmar’s odd–even vehicle driving ban; petrol station queues have been reported across Thailand, Laos and Myanmar.
