Aboard the icebreaker Araon in the Amundsen Sea, a New York Times photographer made close-up photographs of the Thwaites Glacier while the ship sailed back and forth collecting oceanographic data on Thursday and Friday.

“I probably shot all the corners and sides of the entire Thwaites’s shelves,” the photographer said. The coverage notes that as the glacier sheds ice every day, its many faces change, and that these photos capture just a moment in time of the melting Thwaites.

Chang W. Lee, who shot the images, has been a photographer for The Times for 30 years and is currently based in Seoul. The Times listed his Instagram handle as @nytchangster.

The Times said the research expedition is continuing over the next several weeks and invited readers to check back for more photos and videos.
