Picard never confirmed whether Geordi actually captained the USS Challenger

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 brought LeVar Burton back as Geordi La Forge, but the series did not settle whether he ever served as captain of the USS Challenger — a role shown in Star Trek: Voyager's Season 5 episode "Timeless" as an on-screen alternate future. In Picard he appears as a commodore and the curator of the Starfleet Museum.

The Voyager episode presents that future as erased when the crew prevents Voyager's crash, leaving it unclear if that timeline unfolded in the Prime continuity. Before Picard, Geordi's last on-screen rank was lieutenant commander in Star Trek: Nemesis, and the franchise has never shown him as a captain or commander in the main live-action canon.
