When Halley Kate McGookin, a social media influencer with 1.6 million TikTok followers, posted after testifying in a New York City court, many commenters fixated on the matcha-colored polka-dot wrap blouse and cascade skirt she wore. The outfit is available from Vita Grace for $255, or it can be rented from Ms.

McGookin through Pickle for $55. Pickle is a peer-to-peer apparel-rental app where users rent directly from owners who set fees based on the item and the loan time. Unlike subscription services, the platform lists 350,000 items, some offered for sale, and leaves cleaning to owners while providing courier services for local drop-offs or shipping labels for longer distances.

The company enforces a protection policy to hold renters responsible for late returns, missing items and damage. The founders, Brian McMahon and Julia O’Mara, first built a polling marketplace to help purchase decisions; in 2022 they shifted toward borrowing after noticing people suggested items they already owned.
