People reported that a pilot died after a private plane caught fire while attempting to land at Provincetown Municipal Airport in Cape Cod on Sunday, Jan. 4.

The plane ignited around 3:15 p.m. local time, according to a Town of Provincetown Facebook post. The pilot, the sole occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene after the Provincetown Fire Department and mutual aid partners extinguished the blaze. The Massachusetts State Police said the pilot was attempting to land, according to WCVB, and the pilot's identity has not been publicly disclosed.

The airport was closed following the crash and remained closed on Monday, Jan. 5, Assistant Town Manager Dan Riviello said, according to the Cape Cod Times. The National Transportation Safety Board, the Federal Aviation Administration and Massachusetts State Police were notified; the NTSB is investigating and Massachusetts State Police provided no further information.
