Jeannine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, said on Monday that anyone who brings a gun into the capital will go to jail, her remarks on Fox News warned. On the program Ms. Pirro declared, "if anyone brings 'a gun into the District, you mark my words, you're going to jail.

I don't care if you have a license in another district and I don't care if you're a law-abiding gun owner somewhere else.'" The comments prompted swift pushback from the Republican Party's pro-Second Amendment wing and came amid wider conservative debate after Alex Pretti, a licensed gun owner, was shot by federal immigration agents last month during a protest in Minneapolis.

The shooting has prompted mixed messages from the Trump administration: "I don't like that he had a gun, I don't like that he had two fully loaded magazines, that's a lot of bad stuff," Mr. Trump said last week in Iowa. Several Republican lawmakers criticized or disputed Ms. Pirro's assertion.

Representative Greg Steube of Florida wrote that he travels into Washington each week with a firearm and that he holds licenses in Florida and D.C.: "I have a license in Florida and DC to carry. And I will continue to carry to protect myself and others," he wrote. Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky pointed to D.C.
