Players Cooperate to Unlock Marathon’s Final Level
Bungie quietly activated mysterious terminals in its new extraction shooter Marathon before the weekend, starting an alternate reality game. Over the last 72+ hours players and creators across Twitch, Discord, Twitter and Reddit have worked together on puzzles in the hope the game’s final level will be unlocked.
On March 6 previously offline terminals scattered around the first map, Perimeter, came to life. They resembled the terminals from Bungie’s original Marathon trilogy, and visiting them in the right order produced a message from an unknown voice the community believes is Durandal.
The terminals also pointed to a website showing scrambled camera feeds from “Cyro Archive,” the announced endgame map; when Bungie shared that site the puzzle-solving intensified. Players discovered the camera feeds used progress bars that changed every 15 minutes.
