Players push Thomas and Friends game to break steam speed records

A new Thomas the Tank Engine title is topping Steam’s bestseller chart, beating Resident Evil Requiem, and some players are determined to test its physics to the limit. Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor launched this week from Dovetail Games, the studio behind Train Simulator and Train Sim World.

The game offers a campaign based on original series stories, but in free-roam mode a few players have been chasing speed records. One clip shows Chandler's Railway using the little tank engine Percy to reach 127mph, nudging past Mallard’s long-standing 126mph mark from 1938, while another clip claims Percy hit 143mph before being sent skyward by the game’s physics.

Mallard also appears in what the writer calls the Thomas the Tank Engine Extended Universe, having shown up in a 1991 book and as DLC for Train Simulator Classic.
