It’s been 27 years and the anime still hasn’t adapted Red’s appearance atop Mt. Silver from Pokémon Gold & Silver, the moment when the game’s protagonist, Gold (later renamed Ethan), comes face-to-face with the hero of Red & Blue. For many young Pokémon fans, it’s an unforgettable twist on par with Darth Vader being Luke Skywalker’s father — a surprise that lands as a no-holds-barred battle rather than a ceremonial meeting.

The manga Pokémon Adventures does have Red and Gold cross paths, but it frames the encounter as Red training and ultimately passing the torch to his successor. That mentor/protégé reading removes much of the shock value and mystique that defines the game encounter.

The anime never gave us a true Red, and Ash Ketchum has served as the closest stand-in. Though his early record differs from Red’s, Ash steadily grew into a far more capable trainer and even defeated Leon in Pokémon Journeys, placing him on par with Red.
