Pokémon Pokopia’s DJ Rotom Casts Doubt on ‘Sound’ Type Theory
Pokémon Pokopia arrives on Switch 2 tomorrow and introduces several new forms for familiar monsters. One of these is DJ Rotom, a stereo-like form of the ghost/electric Pokémon that inhabits technology. When Rotom possesses different appliances its type changes, and the stereo form is the only new character in Pokopia that doesn’t share the same type as its base form.
Pokopia’s Pokédex lists Stereo Rotom as an electric/normal-type, a combination not seen before for the species. That new typing has fans wondering if this form might later be catchable in a mainline Pokémon game and what that would mean for a long-running theory about a potential new “Sound” type.
Giving a speaker-themed Rotom a Normal typing has been read by some as a setback for the sound-type idea. Introducing a new element would disrupt the current elemental spread, which has been in place for over a decade, and many sound-based moves already fit neatly into Normal.
