Pokopia takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of the Kanto region. Humans have disappeared and their Pokémon have been left behind, trying to make the remains of the old civilization into one they can live in and sustain by themselves. Notes and letters found around the world indicate a climate crisis forced people to evacuate the planet and leave the Pokémon in a massive PC server for their safety.

When the Pokémon wake and find the world destroyed and their humans missing, they do not understand what happened and set about trying to fix the world in hopes humanity might return. The playable Pokémon is a Ditto that transforms into its trainer, and much fan art shows that Ditto grappling with grief—wearing a partner’s form to remember them or imagining a reunion after many years.

Artists have also focused on figures like the sickly Peakychu and Professor Tangrowth, who has been wandering Kanto alone for many years since humans disappeared.
