Pokémon Winds & Waves fans worry Pombon looks a bit too familiar
New Pokémon starters often prompt comparisons, and Pombon is no different. Fans have likened the fiery Pomeranian to a range of creatures, but one resemblance has drawn particular attention. Players of the indie RPG Cassette Beasts noticed a striking similarity to that game's orange, fire-based Pomeranian mascot, which is named Pombomb.
Beyond shared coloration and elemental theme, the near-identical names have prompted debate; one fan wrote, "The design itself is really cute, the name is absolutely copying," while another said, "I thought I was going crazy." Bytten Studio did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Some observers point out that Cassette Beasts reached about 1.1 million players in 2023, so it’s possible at least one person involved with Pokémon has seen the indie title, though a coincidental overlap in concept and puns is equally plausible. It also remains unclear whether Pombon's eventual evolution line will change its overall likeness to the Cassette Beasts creature.
