Police investigate racist abuse aimed at four Premier League players
Police have opened investigations after four Premier League players reported racist messages over the weekend. Wolves forward Tolu Arokodare and Sunderland midfielder Romaine Mundle said they received abusive posts after their Sunday matches, following reports earlier in the weekend from Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana and Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri.
The head of the UK Football Policing Unit, Cheshire chief constable Mark Roberts, warned that those directing abuse cannot “hide behind their keyboards”. He said the unit had received four separate reports of abuse towards top-flight players over the last three days and would work to identify those responsible.
Rangers also said two players, Djeidi Gassama and Emmanuel Fernandez, received racial abuse on Instagram after Sunday’s draw with Livingston; the content was reported to Meta and will be referred to police.
