President Trump’s approval rating stands at 40 percent and his 2024 gains among young, nonwhite and lower-turnout voters have largely reversed, according to today’s New York Times/Siena University poll. Democrats lead by five percentage points among registered voters nationwide, a margin the poll says would be enough to take back the House of Representatives.

The poll finds the demographic patterns now look much like they did in the run-up to Mr. Trump’s 2020 defeat, with young and nonwhite voters likelier to disapprove than they were then and Mr. Trump retaining most support among older and white voters. One exception is party identification: self-identified Democrats still outnumber Republicans by three points, which the analysis describes as a lingering reminder that some shift occurred during the Biden years.

The analysis points to the economy as the chief driver of Mr. Trump’s slide: just 34 percent approve of his handling of the cost of living while 64 percent disapprove, his second-worst issue score after his handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files. Among voters who say they backed Mr.

Trump in 2024 but disapprove of him now, 44 percent cite an economic issue as the biggest problem facing the country, versus 24 percent of other voters. The poll also notes voters give Mr. Trump negative marks on immigration, foreign policy and other issues, and that recent developments such as a U.S.
