Port Vale stun Sunderland to reach first FA Cup quarter-final in 72 years
Port Vale stunned Sunderland to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time in 72 years, with the League One side, bottom of their division, advancing thanks to a late winner from Ben Waine. A Newcastle fan from New Zealand, Waine reproduced Alan Shearer’s single-arm celebration in front of the travelling Sunderland supporters after scoring; the Newcastle legend retweeted the BBC’s post.
Waine had also scored the fourth-round winner against Bristol City and the second-round winner against Bristol Rovers as Vale have found solace in the cup amid a difficult league campaign. Sunderland have enjoyed an excellent first season back in the Premier League under Régis Le Bris, while Vale have struggled to adapt after promotion, prompting Jon Brady to replace Darren Moore in January.
On a rutted pitch and in front of a capacity 10,685 crowd, Vale produced the energy and organisation to rise to the challenge. "I was in dreamland," Waine said. "To be involved in this game and score the winner is pretty special.
