Portugal reviews Mexico friendly after nationwide security alerts

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) said it is reassessing plans for its trip to Mexico after security alerts were issued across multiple regions. The friendly is scheduled for March 28 as part of the reopening of Estadio Banorte, formerly Estadio Azteca. Mexican authorities activated emergency alerts in more than 20 states beginning Sunday, February 22, after the arrest of an individual allegedly linked to organized crime.

The federation said it is closely monitoring developments and evaluating conditions surrounding the delegation’s travel, noting that the evolving situation requires continuous assessment before final determinations are made. The FPF added that coordination with the Portuguese government will be decisive in any eventual decision and that it remains in regular contact with the Mexican Football Federation, highlighting the strong institutional relationship between the two organisations.

For now, the friendly match remains on schedule.
