Martin Clunes has drawn praise for his role in this year’s Wuthering Heights opposite Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. He plays Cathy’s father—drunk, generous, cruel and funny—a part that could have drifted into the background but which makes a strong impression; Peter Bradshaw says he “pretty much pinches the whole film”.
Clunes has crossed paths with the Hollywood A‑list before, notably as Richard Burbage in Shakespeare in Love alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, Joseph Fiennes and Judi Dench. That role carries extra resonance: his father, Alec Clunes, was a distinguished Shakespearean actor who died when Martin was eight.
His film work also includes 1992’s Carry On Columbus, 1994’s Staggered—which he directed—and 1999’s Hunting Venus, where he reunites with Neil Morrissey as a washed‑up New Romantic with a quiff to rival A Flock of Seagulls. His next project sees him playing the eponymous disgraced BBC presenter in Channel 5’s The Downfall of Huw Edwards.
