Pretty Little Liars Remains a Timeless, Addictive Teen Mystery
Life as a teenage girl in the 2010s came with a surplus of cringey romances and delicious teen mysteries, and amid those scandals sat the seven-season mystery-thriller Pretty Little Liars. The show blends drama, death, friendship and romance into a story that still feels addictive, a meditation on how secrets fester and corrupt everything they touch.
The four titular girls—Aria (Lucy Hale), whose parents are separating; Hanna (Ashley Benson), newly popular and adjusting to weight loss; Emily (Shay Mitchell), navigating her sexuality; and Spencer (Troian Bellisario), the high-achieving but troubled one—reunite after the body of their once-leader Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) is found.
Their return throws them into a tense investigation as an anonymous tormentor known only as “A” threatens to expose their darkest secrets. Even for viewers who already know the reveal, the show’s twisting investigation rewards re-watches, and its willingness to drag adults into the mystery pushes it into genuinely dark territory.
