Prime Video's 'Fallout' Revived the Post-Apocalyptic Genre
Prime Video's adaptation of Fallout brought the post-apocalyptic sub-genre back into the mainstream, joining other strong sci-fi entries on the service such as The Expanse, Tales From the Loop and The Man in the High Castle. Based on the video game franchise created by Black Isle Studios and later developed by Bethesda Softworks, the story is set 250 years after resource wars between the USA and the Communist Nations left the landscape irradiated.
Ella Purnell stars as Lucy, a vault dweller who ventures to the surface to find her father, aided by a mercenary called The Ghoul (Walton Goggins) and Maximus, a recruit to the Brotherhood of Steel. The show has also pushed terms like nuclear fallout, power armor, ghouls and okey-dokey into broader awareness.
Where The Last of Us aligns more closely with the zombie sub-genre, Fallout embraces the wider post-apocalyptic toolkit and has become one of Prime Video's biggest shows, drawing comparisons with The Boys and Reacher.
