Prince of Persia track backs Ilia Malinin's Olympic short program
American figure skater Ilia Malinin used music from Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown for his short program in the Winter Olympics figure skating Team Event. The 21-year-old, known as the "Quad God" for his quadruple axel, is also a noted gamer and often skates in outfits with a video game feel.
The routine included "The Lost Crown," a rap track by 2WEI, Joznez, and Kataem that was made for the game's debut trailer in 2023 and contains lines such as "I only run with immortals." The song has the kind of dramatic edge that suits an Olympic program, and it’s a deep cut: The Lost Crown was well received by critics, but its developer team was disbanded less than a year after the game’s release.
Malinin did not fully land the program on Feb. 7, scoring 98 and finishing second behind Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama, but he delivered a stronger skate the next day that helped Team USA win gold in the Team Event. He is scheduled to skate the short program again on Feb.
