Phil Lord and Christopher Miller return after a 12-year hiatus with Project Hail Mary, an adaptation of Andy Weir's novel. The film follows Dr. Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), who wakes from deep sleep with amnesia aboard a spaceship and slowly learns he is on a mission to save humanity.

He soon meets a rock-like extraterrestrial he names Rocky. The story focuses on the bond that develops as Grace and Rocky teach each other language and culture, transforming a one-way, seemingly suicidal mission into a tale of cooperation. They must confront an organism that consumes stars, and the mission’s original plan was to collect data and send it home via small probes.

Two late twists reshape the stakes: Grace’s flashbacks reveal he was sent on the Hail Mary against his will, and he ultimately decides to use his remaining fuel to return Rocky to his planet, Erid, while dispatching the probes that carry a solution back to Earth.
