Microsoft’s pitch that the next-gen Xbox will rival the Steam Machine is a bold shift, and Asha Sharma’s emphasis on “performance” and “PC games” makes it clear Project Helix is heading toward PC territory. I’m glad there’s a plan, but I worry the project could abandon the straightforward, couch-friendly instincts that define a console.

The Xbox Full Screen Experience tries to unify libraries and settings without a mouse, much like SteamOS or Big Picture Mode, but it still feels like an overlay on a messy operating system. Windows quirks, Co‑Pilot and Teams intrusions can break a relaxed gaming session, which suggests Project Helix needs a more refined, untethered shell or a radically different build to keep the console feel.

There’s also the question of backwards compatibility. Moving to a PC-style architecture and prioritizing Game Pass streaming risks leaving owners of One, 360 and original Xbox games behind, and trading Series X/S support for PC parity would be a gamble many players won’t welcome.
