Paris Saint-Germain arrived at last season's climax as Europe's best team, sweeping domestic trophies and finally lifting the Champions League after beating Inter. While attackers such as Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia took much of the acclaim, Gianluigi Donnarumma played a decisive role at the back — including two saved penalties against Liverpool and a string of key stops across the quarter- and semi-finals — yet the club prioritised his sale to Manchester City for £26 million.

PSG then signed Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier on a five-year deal reportedly worth €55m, with Luis Enrique saying the club was "looking for a different profile" and valuing Chevalier's passing figures (722 successful passes to Donnarumma's 463). Donnarumma, who described his exit as "disappointed and disheartened," said he "felt let down (by PSG) because I adapted, paid special attention" and later accepted the move to City.

Reports also claimed wage demands played a part, with a large gap between the two keepers' reported offers.
