Queensland police sued after officer called Indians ‘perverts’
The rideshare driver named Singh has launched legal action against Queensland police after officers were recorded describing Indians as "a bunch of fucking perverts" while investigating allegations that were later withdrawn. He says his requests for a translator and a lawyer were ignored during the year-long investigation that led to him being charged with committing an indecent act.
Police were called to a street in Lawnton on 26 January 2023 after a resident claimed to have seen the Indian national masturbating in his car and yelled racist abuse. Singh showed officers his phone, which had details of a nearby Uber trip and a call log showing he had been on the phone to his sister in India for the preceding 59 minutes; he says he was animated and gesticulating while talking.
He alleges requests for an interpreter, for a lawyer and to speak with his sister before being interviewed were refused.
