Raised my kids in 3 different countries; best lessons I still use
Raising kids across 3 countries — the US, Australia, Switzerland — changed how I approach parenting. It opened my eyes to how different cultures empower children and taught me to treat my experiences as a "cultural buffet": try new methods, keep what works, and leave the rest behind.
In Switzerland, independence is promoted from an early age. I was stunned to see 5-year-olds in high-visibility vests walk to school alone; a neighbor summed it up: "Children can do amazing things when you let them." I began giving my children more responsibility, letting them walk to the park and bakery, and learned to let them be a little uncomfortable — playing in rain or a bit of snow while teachers calmly supervised from outside.
Australia taught me the value of preparation and a relaxed confidence. Helicopter parenting is widely frowned upon there, and as a teacher I saw how hovering undermined children's confidence.
